Frequently asked questions
Is it better to prepay or invest?
Prepaying gives a guaranteed, tax-free return equal to your loan rate. If your after-tax investment returns are reliably higher than that rate, investing can win, but prepaying is risk-free. Many people split the difference.
Are there charges for prepaying a floating-rate loan?
In India, RBI rules bar banks from charging prepayment penalties on floating-rate loans to individuals. Fixed-rate loans can carry a 2–5% fee.
When is the best time to prepay?
As early as possible. In the first years most of your EMI is interest, so principal you prepay then saves interest for the longest time.
